What Makes a Professional Photographer?

I came across this quote the other day, and its relevance to the practice of professional photography really struck me.

Miss England Stops the Traffic

Last Thursday, 23rd April, was St George's Day, and I spent a fun couple of hours at the Houses of Parliament taking photographs at a special reception hosted by the St. George's Day All Party Parliamentary Group.

The event, held for MPs, peers and other guests, was attended by Miss England, Laura Coleman who arrived in style in an open-top Lotus Elise and carried out a number of official duties, including pinning a rose on an obliging policeman, carrying the Loving Cup of England, posing in front of a special St. George's Day bus and handing out red roses to members of the public in Parliament Square.

Location portraiture is just so much fun!  When you work outdoors, the whole world becomes your studio and there are literally no limits to the sort of images you can take.

I had a fantastic time doing a shoot in London on Wednesday.  With the perfect mix of a beautiful model, some stunning locations around London's Southbank and St James's Park, and a series of striking colour combinations, I got some great shots; here's a sneak peek of just a few of my favourites, all shot using natural light, a Nikon D200 and a Tamron 2.8 lens.

Thanks so much Helina for being such an amazing model, and thanks too to your brothers for being so patient with me while I took the photos, and to your mum for being makeup artist, chauffeur and photographer's assistant all in one! Sorry I kept you waiting so long for your lunch :) xx

Guildford's Firemen Take to the Catwalk for Charity

Last Friday afternoon, I photographed a fashion show at Guildford's Guildhall, in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, based in Farnham.  However, this was a fashion show with a difference! Billed as a "Fashion Inferno", the models were escorted down the catwalk by some of the crew from Guildford fire station, who modelled not only their own gear, but also a range of menswear from some of our local retailers.

Introduced by Peter Gordon from 96.4 The Eagle, and Guildford's mayor, Councillor Jennifer Jordan, the event was great fun and helped raise funds for a very worthy cause.  The models really entered into the spirit of the occasion, and I got some great shots.
